Imitation of Life

A powerful new musical about identity, the American dream, and what we leave for future generations. Inspired by Fannie Hurst’s 1933 novel and the beloved 1934 and 1959 Universal films, Imitation of Life begins a new chapter onstage. With a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, an original score by EGOT winner John Legend, direction by Tony Award nominee Whitney White, and starring Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren. Two mothers. Two daughters. Dreams that will shape generations. From the neon glow of 1920s Atlantic City to the streets of 1930s New York, two single mothers—one Black, one White—and their daughters build a life together while navigating ambition, love, race, and belonging. Their journeys raise powerful questions: What do we sacrifice to be seen? And what do we leave for those who follow? Post-show conversations will take place following the performances on: Wednesday, December 2; Tuesday, December 8; Tuesday, December 15; Thursday, December 17; Tuesday, December 22. Running time: approximately 2 hours 40 minutes with an intermission.
